Reading the news

  • Compare the released number with the forecast. The surprise, not the number itself, moves the market.
  • Gold is priced in US dollars. News that strengthens the dollar or raises interest-rate expectations usually pushes gold down; news that weakens the dollar usually supports gold.
  • Spreads widen and price can spike both ways in the first minutes after high-impact news. Many traders wait for the candle to close.
