How to use it

  1. Choose the instrument and whether the trade is a buy or a sell.
  2. Enter the lot size, the entry price and the exit price you want to check.
  3. Optional: add your take profit and stop loss prices to see both outcomes and the risk-to-reward ratio, and your balance to see the result as a percentage.

The formula

Profit = (Exit − Entry) ÷ Unit × Value of one unit for 1 lot × Lots

For a sell the sign is reversed: the trade earns when the exit is below the entry. "Unit" is one pip for currency pairs (0.0001, or 0.01 for yen pairs) and $1 of price for gold and silver.

Worked example: gold

Buy 0.10 lot XAUUSD at 4,150, close at 4,165. The price moved $15. One lot of gold is 100 ounces, so 0.10 lot is 10 ounces:

Profit = 15 × $100 × 0.10 = +$150

With a take profit at 4,170 (+$200) and a stop at 4,140 (−$100) the risk-to-reward ratio is 1 : 2.

Worked example: USDJPY

Buy 1 lot USDJPY at 150.00, close at 150.50: +50 pips. One pip on 1 lot is 1,000 yen, so the profit is 50,000 yen, about $332 at 150.50. Because the profit is earned in yen, its dollar value moves with the exchange rate.

What the result does not include

  • Spread and commission: a buy opens at the ask and closes at the bid, so a trade starts slightly negative.
  • Swap: overnight financing charged or paid for holding a position past the daily rollover.
  • Slippage: in fast markets orders can fill at a worse price than requested.

Planning the outcome before entering is the point: if the reward at the target is not clearly larger than the loss at the stop, the trade usually is not worth taking.

Exchange rates come from the same live market feed as our gold price. Your broker's prices, contract sizes and fees decide the final result.

Frequently asked questions

How is profit calculated on gold (XAUUSD)?

With the standard contract of 100 ounces per lot: profit = price change in dollars × 100 × lots. A $10 move on 0.05 lot is $50.

What is a good risk-to-reward ratio?

There is no single correct number; it has to fit your win rate. With a 1 : 2 ratio you break even when about 33% of trades win; with 1 : 1 you need just over 50% (before costs).

Why does my broker show a slightly different profit?

Because of spread, commission, swap, the exact fill prices, the exchange rate used for conversion and, on some accounts, a different contract size.

Can I use it for a sell trade?

Yes. Choose Sell: the result is positive when the exit price is below the entry price.
